Why Do Giraffes Have Long Necks?

The giraffe is one of the most distinctive creatures on earth, with an amazingly long neck that can be as long as two meters in length. Interestingly, a giraffe has the same number of neck bones (cervical vertebrae) as do humans. How can a giraffe have such a long neck when ours are so short, and what are the advantages or disadvantages of such a neck? In this issue, we will discover how a giraffe's most famous feature is also a key to its survival.

Though a giraffe has the same number of cervical vertebrae as other mammals, its long neck is the result of the disproportionate lengthening of each piece of the neck bone. However, the giraffe's neck does not droop because of the anchor muscles on the giraffe's shoulders that help maintain its neck in the upright position. A giraffe's long neck also allows this creature to reach the tree tops to feed on new leaves as well as to see incoming predators from afar. Nevertheless, this famous feature can sometimes lead to a giraffe's detriment. A giraffe cannot run away from its predator for an extended period of time because of its high blood pressure, which is necessary to pump its blood up through its long neck and ultimately to its brain. Therefore, if a predator is closing in, giraffe must use its strong legs to deliver a powerful kick that can decapitate even the African lion in order to defend itself.

Aside from the physical aspect, a giraffe's long neck is also important for its social interactions. The male giraffe engages in a "necking" combat in order to establish dominance among its peers. This dominance, in turn, also allows access to the female, which is an essential process in natural selection. Therefore, a giraffe's long neck is not just for show, but it is also an essential part of its very existence.
