They have all the basic kicks, of course. They can score with the powerful drive, keeping it on low trajectory or lofting it over the defenders. They can power an incoming ball into the net with a volley, striking it before it hits the ground (a full volley) or just when it hits the ground (half volley), or they might use their heel to "backheel" the ball in the direction of an open teammate. Then again, they might use their toe to poke home an incoming pass.

When necessary, they can also score with a delicate chip, softly kicking it with a high arc over an onrushing goalkeeper. Or, they can bring the crowd to its feet by falling backward and kicking the ball over their head with a dramatic bicycle kick, also known as the scissor kick.

The head is a weapon as well. Meeting an incoming cross solidly with the forehead is a powerful shot, but a glancing header, where the ball is deflected off the head at an angle, can be just as effective. Or an attacker can let the ball to pass over his head and then flick the ball back to a team-mate to smash into an open net. The most spectacular header of all is probably the diving header. It doesn't happen very often, but when a home-team player scores one, the crowd goes wild, particularly when it is a late-game winning goal or an equalizer.

All this makes the goalkeeper's job very difficult, but it is further complicated by the fact that the ball doesn't always come at them in a straight line. Attackers are adept at adding spin to their shots, curling (bending) the ball in one direction or slicing or hooking it in the other direction. Worse yet, the more powerful the shot, the better the chance the ball may swerve in an unpredictable way.
